The strong tremors that alarmed residents of the provinces in the southern Oriente region of Cuba (Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo) on the morning of this Sunday had a devastating impact on the housing and road infrastructure in the area.
The first occurred around 10 a.m. with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, and the second was 6.7 at 11:46 a.m., said the head of the National Seismological Service, Enrique Diego Arango Arias.
Arango Arias clarified that, in response to comments about potential tsunamis, such events are unlikely to occur in this area.
Social media users have reported damage to homes and state institutions due to these tremors.
