Miami authorities issued a statement to residents due to concerns about aftershocks in the city following the earthquakes that occurred in eastern Cuba on Sunday morning.
"The City of Miami is aware that some residents in the Brickell/Downtown area may be concerned about the recent earthquake off the coast of Cuba. However, we want to assure everyone that NO earthquakes or aftershocks are being felt in Miami. The USGS (United States Geological Survey) has detected no effects in South Florida, and no warnings have been issued," the entity reported via its social media channels.
They also stated that the city's Fire Department had responded to calls from concerned residents, so they deemed it necessary to emphasize that there is no reason for alarm.
"Our Fire Department as well as the Construction Department are closely monitoring the situation, and all safety protocols are in place," they assured.
At 10:50 a.m. this Sunday, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 48 kilometers southeast of Pilón, Granma province, in Cuba.
Later, at 12:49 pm, an aftershock was registered with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale, surpassing the initial earthquake.
These events raised concerns among the population and prompted the authorities to activate emergency protocols.
The National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) reported that the second earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers and was felt in the eastern provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Las Tunas, and Holguín, as well as in Camagüey and Ciego de Ávila.
So far, material damages have been reported, but there have been no confirmed fatalities.
