The dock of the main town in the coastal municipality of Pilón, in Granma, one of the locations closest to the epicenter of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake recorded this Sunday in eastern Cuba, shows severe damage that highlights the power of the quake.
On Facebook, a person named Alex shared a video that reveals the magnitude of the 6.7 earthquake recorded at 12:49 PM, located 32 kilometers southeast of Pilón, as well as the premonitory event of 6.0 that occurred at 10:50 AM.
The images reveal large cracks in several areas of the slab that makes up the dock. In certain sections, raised fragments are also observed, and while it is not specified whether these are prior or recent damages, the surprised reaction of those filming suggests they may be a result of the earthquakes.
You can also see destroyed planters and a wall, apparently from a boardwalk, that is almost detached.
Saúl Manuel, another user, also shared a video showing the damage caused by the earthquakes at the Pilón dock.
"The floor of the Pilón Pier in Granma was raised due to today's earthquakes in the East," he noted.
As of 5:00 PM Cuba time, the National Seismological Service had recorded at least 300 aftershocks from the earthquake that occurred this Sunday southeast of Pilón, in Granma, of which at least 15 have been felt by the population.
Although the seismic events caused damage in several areas of Santiago de Cuba, the most significant impacts are concentrated in the province of Granma.
From several municipalities in Granma, located along the southern coast of the province (Pilón, Campechuela, Media, Niquero), distressing images have emerged, capturing the destruction and fear that have taken over the streets of these towns.
Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), warned on his social media that the situation is quite complicated following the occurrence of two earthquakes.
On Facebook, Arango stated that "the situation is quite complicated; there are many reports of damage in Pilón, and we need any reports of damages you may have."
