Cuban-American Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar spoke with financial magnate Elon Musk about the issue of providing free Internet to Cuba.
Musk, owner of Starlink, a company designed to provide low-cost broadband Internet service, listened to the Republican politician about their intention to bring connectivity to the Cuban people.
"It was great talking to Elon Musk this morning," said María Elvira on her X account.
"We have the technology; we just need the will. We can achieve it!" he emphasized.
Musk was appointed by Trump to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established to transform the state apparatus, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance administrative efficiency.
Access to the Internet in Cuba has been one of Salazar's priorities for years.
In 2022, he requested the billionaire to install his satellite internet technology for Cuba, just as he did in Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
"I thank Mr. Musk [for his technological support to Ukraine] and I would love for him to do the same for Cuba," he then said.
Months later, he opened the door to the possibility of bringing his Internet service to Cuba when he responded with a brief "Ok" to a question posed on Twitter by a human rights advocate asking whether it was technically feasible for Starlink to serve the Cuban people.
In 2021, following the regime's repression of the protests on July 11, María Elvira called for immediate assistance to enable the people of the Island to connect to the Internet without censorship.
"The Cuban people need immediate, uncensored Internet to connect with other Cubans and the world. We must help them expose the brutality of the communist regime and put an end to communism in Cuba once and for all," he stated.
The Republican representative, who has just been reelected for a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, stated that Washington can help prevent communities from falling into the clutches of communism.
