The Electric Company of Holguín had no better "initiative" than to organize a "voluntary work" event, calling on its employees to sort screws, while power outages in the province exceed 15 hours a day and the population cries out for effective solutions to the worst energy crisis in Cuba's history.
"Today, a volunteer effort is taking place at the PSFV CORUA for the classification of screws. Workers from the Security and Protection Union Section of the Electric Company of Holguín are present," the state-owned company stated on its social media this Saturday.
Just two hours earlier, the Electric Company of Holguín had shared on Facebook the "rotation plan for blocks on November 16, 2024" and warned of a "day with significant service disruptions," according to the forecast of the Electric Union (UNE).
In that regard, it informed its customers that Blocks B3 and B4 would experience a blackout lasting 15 hours on Saturday, while Blocks B1 and B2 would only be affected for nine hours.
The contrast between the critical situation faced by a population that receives barely nine to fifteen hours of electricity a day, and the celebration on social media of a day of “voluntary work” dedicated to the “sorting of screws,” sparked mockery and outrage among users who cannot understand the incompetence of the country's leaders and authorities in reversing the crisis that has left them in an unprecedented state of “energy poverty.”
"People are waiting for the power, and here we are tightening screws," commented a user on the Facebook page of the state-owned company in Holguín.
"Important technological breakthrough to fix power outages using Artificial Intelligence. Are they out of their minds? Three people there, sorting screws. What a way to lie to the Cubans, my goodness! And then they blame a blockade that never existed. Their time is running out: the whole world knows what they have done for 65 years; they have lied to everyone," said another.
"How outrageous! So, a Screw Classification... You guys have entered the world of memes, haven't you? A country on the brink of an energy collapse... and you're classifying screws," reasoned a third person.
"Take the opportunity to find what's missing in their heads and solve the energy deficiency. They don't even blush when delivering such news, how outrageous!" remarked a user who pointed out the lack of sense among the regime's leaders.
However, one of the main contributors to the collapse of the national electro-energy system (SEN), the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, warned at the end of September that recovery would not be an easy task, and reiterated the difficulty of cleaning the thousands of pipes in the condensers of the thermoelectric plants.
Regarding the long-term solution of generating electricity from renewable energy sources, the minister also described it as a Herculean task.
"There are millions of photovoltaic solar panels; there are hundreds of millions of screws, nuts, washers, and steel structures... there are thousands and thousands of piles to be driven," explained De la O Levy.
Those responsible for the Electric Company of Holguín must have thought that if the minister in charge can provide such explanations to the Cuban people, they could also promote their latest "volunteer work": sorting screws.
