Temperatures in western Cuba have dropped below 20 degrees Celsius (°C) this Thursday following the arrival of a cold front.

According to the report from the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) at 11:00 AM, maximum temperatures will range from 25 to 28 °C in the western region and from 28 to 31 °C in the rest of the country, with higher temperatures in some areas of the southeastern region.

At night, temperatures will drop to between 19 and 22 °C in the west and center, and between 22 and 25 °C in the east.

In addition to the drop in temperatures, INSMET forecasted some rainfall in the central region for the afternoon and evening.

On Facebook, the user Yosmelvi Páez Cornell, creator of the channel Aficionados a la Meteorología (AALM), explained that as the cold front moves away from the western region of Cuba towards the central part, the colder air mass will begin to influence the western area this afternoon, bringing a slight change in weather, particularly on the northern coast.

"Starting tomorrow, Friday the 22nd, and throughout the weekend, the cold air mass will begin to have a greater impact on the national territory, and winter conditions will be felt," he emphasized.

On Wednesday, the Meteorological Institute issued Special Notice No. 1 regarding the occurrence of rain, showers, and thunderstorms in the western region, associated with a cold front that brings extensive areas of cloud cover and storms.

"The images from the weather radars in Casa Blanca, Havana, and La Bajada in Pinar del Río detect strong storm areas along approximately 500 kilometers from the north of the Yucatán Peninsula to Key West," the report detailed.

According to the report, heavy rainfall may occur in some areas of the western region, particularly in Pinar del Río, Artemisa, and Havana, associated with the movement of storm areas.

"In inland areas and along the northern coast where intense storm activity occurs, severe weather events may take place, such as strong gusty winds, hail, and other severe conditions," the advisory added.

On Wednesday, the first cold front of the winter season arrived in Cuba, bringing a drop in temperatures along with showers and rainfall in the western region.

The phenomenon was preceded by "a prefrontal band with heavy activity of showers, rain, and thunderstorms," as reported on social media by meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez.
