A Cuban father reported, in a heartbreaking testimony, the recent death of his son in a hospital in the Mayabeque province due to negligence and a lack of medical care.
Lázaro Pérez Díaz reported that on November 21, his 35-year-old son, identified as Lázaro Pérez Báez, arrived at the Leopoldito Martínez Hospital in the municipality of San José de Las Lajas at 8:30 a.m. with what appeared to be appendicitis.
The distressed father recounted that his son had been sitting on a stretcher for hours, twisted in pain, knowing it was dangerous and required surgery.
“They didn’t take him to the operating room, they didn’t send him to Havana urgently, they didn’t perform any kind of ultrasound, and he suffered until he died,” said Pérez Báez, who repeatedly termed what happened a crime. “In his final moments, he suffered, crying out for help, and I, desperate, yelled for someone to attend to him, that his ‘stomach’ was about to burst, and none of them rushed to help,” the man added, specifically denouncing a surgeon named “Andri,” who, despite being contacted and informed that his son was in critical condition, ended up hiding within the hospital and never showed his face again.
Lázaro Pérez says that his son went to the doctor several days in a row, and they always told him it was a bad digestion, but they never conducted an ultrasound.
“It was a crime, a 'boy' of 35 years, a fighter, full of life, full of health […] They killed him in this hospital. My blood pressure has gone up several times, but I will continue to fight for justice,” the complainant emphasized.
According to Pérez Díaz's account, his son also suffered from an additional complication of a "perforated hernia," and he questioned why his son was not sent to the capital sooner.
"They said they had no resources, but why didn't they send it to me in time for Havana? When he lost his pulse, they started to run at the last minute. He arrived in Havana, and the anesthesiologist told us he was too critical, that he could no longer be saved because he arrived too late," he lamented.
The desperate father called the doctors who denied proper care to his son "murderers" and expressed his willingness to confront them.
He also specified that the alleged responsible parties are now scrambling and coming up with excuses for what happened in order to "save themselves."
"But they killed him. They killed him because he didn't receive care. No one from the medical team at that emergency room attended to my son," concluded Lázaro Pérez, who has requested widespread coverage for his complaint.
The video has been accompanied by harrowing images of the moment the boy was sitting on a stretcher waiting for the necessary medical attention.
As of the conclusion of this report, there are no additional confirmed details regarding the complaint, which adds to a rising number of medical negligence cases in Cuba, many of which have resulted in tragic fatalities.
