A visually impaired man was attacked by a group of minors this Monday around 6:30 p.m. while he was sitting on a sidewalk near his home in Cárdenas, Matanzas, as reported by a family member on social media.
Lázaro Corrales, the victim's nephew, reported in the Facebook group "Buy and Sell in CARDENAS" that the attackers, four teenagers, were chased by neighbors after hearing the victim's screams.
He mentioned that one of them was carrying a hidden knife in a shoulder bag, and although he tried to confront those who challenged him, he ultimately fled along with the others down López and Cristina streets.
The relative expressed regret that, due to the age of the offenders and current laws, effective legal action cannot be taken against them, despite the seriousness of the incidents and one of the young individuals carrying a knife.
The report also highlights the insecurity faced by residents in the area, who lack protection even at their doorsteps, both during the day and at night.
Additionally, he noted that when trying to contact the police, there was no landline or mobile phone service available.
The complainant called on local authorities, including the police and sector leaders, to take action, such as checking documents and bags of these youth gangs who carry knives, and warned residents to avoid going out alone at night.
This incident highlights the growing concern about safety in Cárdenas, where citizens feel they are unprotected against such violent acts.
The rise of violence in Cuba, closely linked to the escalation of the economic crisis, is a phenomenon that the regime has acknowledged, but has shown limited capacity to respond to.
One of the solutions that citizens have had to implement is to take justice into their own hands. Recently, two alleged thieves were captured by the people of Santiago de Cuba.
Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta shared on his Facebook wall videos of the individuals who were already detained by the public, who held them immobilized while waiting for the police to arrive.
Last week, residents of Havana apprehended a young man accused of assaulting high school students on the street. The individual, only 18 years old, was robbing teenagers at knifepoint to take their mobile phones.
