The Cuban Electric Union (UNE) began gradually restoring service in several areas of Matanzas on Thursday, after synchronizing Energás Varadero with the microsystem that supplies this region.
According to a post on the social media platform Facebook, this has allowed for the reactivation of several circuits in the main city, as well as in Cárdenas and Colón.
Currently, Matanzas has 10 MW of electric generation, and other circuits are being prepared to be energized as soon as generation conditions allow, according to a post by user Pedro Rizo Martínez.
Kenny Cruz, the technical director of the Provincial Electric Company, reported that no significant damage has been recorded in the network, and the review and assessment of the lines are ongoing to ensure the safety of the supply.
It was also reported that as the two microsystems in the center of the island become stronger, energy coverage will expand to more areas in the central region, which includes the provinces from Matanzas to Sancti Spíritus.
This afternoon, the synchronization of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant is expected, which will allow for the expansion of energy to Felton and facilitate the start of operations at this plant.
The situation is becoming more complicated for Artemisa, Mayabeque, and Havana, as stated by the leader Miguel Díaz-Canel on the social media platform X, since the first step was to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Rafael.
It is already known that the storm destroyed several high-voltage towers along the Havana-Artemisa highway, although the damage is more extensive.
Those provinces will remain without electricity until microsystems are initiated. In fact, the Ministry of Energy and Mines has already disclosed that the rehabilitation in those areas will be "a slow process."
Hello, despite the government's claims that electrical workers from the central and eastern provinces of the country had traveled to Havana to assist in recovery efforts following Hurricane Rafael.
