The police fined and issued warnings to at least 24 parents in the province of Sancti Spíritus for the misconduct of their minor children, some of whom have even been involved in criminal activities.

Lieutenant Colonel Yester Reyes Marrero, a specialist from the provincial headquarters of the PNR (National Revolutionary Police), informed the government-aligned newspaper Escambray that three fines were imposed on parents in the municipality of Taguasco due to their children's involvement in disruptions of public order.

In the other municipalities of Sancti Spíritus, the Police issued warnings to 21 parents "for maintaining an educational neglect towards their children." The official stated that this task "is given the highest priority with the intention of ensuring that (young people) return to their studies and work."

Reyes stated that the authorities carried out "educational actions" with the families of minors who "reoffend in behaviors associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages, public disorder, and even in cases of theft with force and violent robbery."

The Cuban police officer explained that in the provincial capital, "14 prevention groups from several popular councils were visited, where discussions were held regarding the main offenses committed by some young people and minors."

According to their statements, “we also worked directly with those families to inform them about the unique characteristics of these minors and what they are involved in or might get involved in if they continue this behavior.”

Reyes spoke to the official press of the province about the “national exercise of prevention and confrontation against crime, corruption, illegalities, and social indiscipline” taking place these days in Cuba, in an effort by the government to curb the alarming rise in crime, violence, and insecurity in the country.

With the usual triumphalism of the authorities, the official announced that "we are working together with the prevention groups in all municipalities and with all the response forces, and today we already have a result that is noticeable to the population."

Weeks ago, during a national meeting addressing these issues, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz stated that crime is declining in the country, although the population does not perceive it.

"Although progress is being made on some issues and indicators, the people still do not see the results, and that is what we are working for. However, some trends indicate that the efforts are starting to yield results, but these will become apparent when the people can perceive them," said Marrero.

According to the statistics up to last August mentioned in that meeting, which were not disclosed as is customary by the regime, the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Ciego de Ávila, Cienfuegos, and Sancti Spíritus reported the highest crime rates.
