The dollar consolidates its price increase in the Cuban informal market

Foreign currencies have started 2025 with recurring fluctuations in their values.

The dollar has solidified its price increase in the informal market over the past few hours, , five pesos more than the previous day.

In the case of the euro, at 9:00 a.m. (local time) the European currency is trading at an average of 340 CUP, the same as yesterday.

Also, the freely convertible currency (MLC), which remains at 245 CUP.

After a decline in prices initiated by the currencies in December—especially following the announcement of a floating official exchange rate in 2025—dollars and euros have recovered since the beginning of 2025.

Evolution of the exchange rate

One of the possible causes highlighted is the recent opening of a new supermarket in Havana, which is exclusively for payments in foreign currencies such as dollars and euros, a fact that marks another step in the dollarization process announced by the regime.

This phenomenon has intensified the demand for foreign currency, as an increasing number of basic goods are only available in stores that operate in foreign currency and do not accept MLC, according to a growing number of Cubans reporting on social media.
