Washington, D.C. – Donald Trump was sworn in this Monday as the 47th president of the United States in an inauguration ceremony held inside the Capitol due to the low temperatures. At 78 years, seven months, and six days old, he becomes the oldest president in the history of the country upon taking office.
The inauguration of Trump was attended by prominent political and business figures. The president took the oath with his hand on two bibles: his personal copy and the one used by Abraham Lincoln. The First Lady, Melania Trump, held the holy books while Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath. After his remarks, a cannon salute resonated at the Capitol, and the ceremony continued with the performance of Hail to the Chief, the presidential anthem.
A speech with a nationalist tone and strong promises
In his first speech as president, Trump declared, "The golden age of America begins now." With a distinctly nationalist tone, he assured that each day of his administration would prioritize the interests of his country: "Our priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous, and free." He also promised to restore American sovereignty, strengthen national security, and end the political use of the Department of Justice.
The speech was filled with references to his return to the White House, emphasizing that his life was saved for a divine purpose after the attack he suffered during the campaign. "God saved me to make America great again," he asserted.
Trump also announced that he will sign several executive orders on the first day of his term. Among his most notable measures, he indicated that he will declare a "national emergency" at the border with Mexico, send troops to curb irregular immigration, and classify drug cartels as "terrorist organizations."
Economic and energy measures
The new president harshly criticized the economic policies of his predecessor and announced a series of reforms in the fiscal and energy sectors. "Instead of taxing our cities, we'll tax other countries to enrich ourselves," he stated. Regarding the inflation crisis, he dismissed the promotion of clean energy and promised to enhance the exploitation of fossil fuels: "We're going to drill, baby, drill."
He also emphasized that he will promote national manufacturing and promised to restore competitiveness to the American automotive industry.
Space ambitions: the U.S. flag on Mars
In an unexpected turn, Trump stated that his administration would focus on space exploration and committed to planting the American flag on Mars. "We will pursue our manifest destiny among the stars," he declared, causing excitement for Elon Musk, who was present at the ceremony.
Stricter immigration policies
Among his most controversial announcements, Trump reaffirmed his intention to strengthen immigration restrictions. He stated that people who enter the U.S. illegally will be "immediately detained" and that he will reactivate the "Remain in Mexico" policy for asylum seekers. Although he did not detail how he will finance the mass detention of migrants, he assured that his administration will put an end to the release of individuals while they await their immigration court processes.
Furthermore, he reiterated one of his most controversial claims by stating that some migrants crossing the border come from prisons and psychiatric hospitals, although he did not provide evidence to support this assertion.
A presidency with clear objectives
Trump concluded his speech with a message of confidence in his leadership: "I am with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you. I will win like never before." With a vision of national greatness, he reaffirmed his commitment to a strong and sovereign country: "Nothing will stand in our way because we are Americans, and our golden age has just begun."
The Republican assumes his second term with the support of a loyal base and the promise to implement radical changes from the outset. His return to the White House marks the beginning of a new political era in the United States.
