Cuban authorities have intensified operations against the trafficking of "the chemical," a synthetic drug that mimics the effects of marijuana but with greater potency and higher risks, the consumption of which has risen significantly among the youth.

On January 15th, two women were arrested in Havana, accused of selling drugs to young people residing in the area of Punta Brava, La Lisa municipality.

The police seized "more than 20 slips of paper with chemicals and methamphetamine, as well as a considerable amount of money from these women, who neither work nor do anything other than enrich themselves by contaminating adolescents with drugs," detailed the state journalist Frank Enrique.

The effects of "the chemical" are severe. In the short term, it can cause euphoria, changes in perception, nausea, tachycardia, convulsions, and loss of muscle control. Continued use can lead to anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, as well as renal, hepatic, and cardiac failure.

Multiple incidents have been reported of individuals under its influence displaying erratic and even aggressive behavior.

This week, a drugged woman confronted people in the middle of the street in Pinar del Río and started attacking everyone who walked by. She assaulted drivers, disrupted traffic, and even got into a car and broke a carton of eggs belonging to the owner.
