The singer Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of the magnate Jeff Bezos, fulfilled their dream of reaching space this Monday as part of Blue Origin's suborbital mission NS-31, in which, for the first time, all crew members were women.
The New Shepard rocket launched at 7:31 a.m. from the Texas desert. Three minutes later, the six passengers crossed the Kármán line, considered the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space.
During the four minutes of weightlessness, excited shouts, laughter, and even an impromptu song by Perry singing What a Wonderful World could be heard.
In addition to Perry and Sánchez, the crew included journalist Gayle King, activist Amanda Nguyen, engineer Aisha Bowe, and producer Kerianne Flynn.
Upon returning to Earth, the capsule landed vertically and without incident, thanks to a parachute system. Bezos, founder of Blue Origin, opened the hatch to greet the astronauts with an emotional embrace of his partner.
"I feel super connected with love... This experience is only surpassed by that of being a mother," Perry declared as she stepped onto solid ground, kneeling down and kissing the ground with a daisy in hand.
Among the attendees at the launch were Kris Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and Oprah Winfrey, who celebrated the achievement and highlighted its inspiring nature.
This flight marks a milestone for the space tourism company, which has already completed 11 crewed missions. In the previous flight, the Spaniard Jesús Calleja became the first space tourist from the country, joining the ranks of public figures who have experienced this unique adventure.
