While average salaries remain stagnant, the cost of comfortable living in Florida continues to soar, according to a new financial study.

The report was prepared by the economic advisory firm SmartAsset and cited by the media Florida Politics, which detailed that a family of four needs $217,651 per year to meet their needs without financial strain.

In the case of a single adult, the figure rises to $97,386 annually, emphasized the news portal.

SmartAsset developed its analysis based on data regarding housing, transportation, food, taxes, and other essential expenses.

Their experts concluded that by 2025, living "comfortably" will be more expensive for all Americans: an additional $5,844 per person and $9,360 more for a family of four compared to the previous year.

Despite Florida ranking 31st nationally for families of four and 22nd for single adults, the figures are far from the average salary.

According to the Florida Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average individual income in 2023 was $66,446, while ZipRecruiter estimates it could drop to $49,261 by 2025.

In comparison, the most expensive states in the country are Hawaii, Massachusetts, and California, where the required income for a family of four far exceeds $280,000 a year.

On the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia was the most "affordable" state, with an estimate of $80,828 for an individual and $195,353 for a family of four.

Although Florida does not top the rankings of the most expensive states to live in, the economic pressure on its residents is significant. A recent analysis placed the state in 13th place regarding housing costs, noting that, on average, Floridians spend more than 30% of their income on mortgage payments and household services.

This figure rises dramatically for renters, who must allocate more than 42% of their monthly income to pay for rent and basic services, placing Florida among the four most expensive states for renting.

The outlook for those aspiring to a middle-class life is not encouraging either. To be considered part of this socioeconomic segment in Florida, a household needs an annual income ranging from $48,869 to $146,622.

This segment reflects a considerable increase compared to previous years, resulting from a sustained rise in the cost of housing, food, and other essential services.

Despite this ranking placing Florida below states like California or Massachusetts, the incomes that provided stability a decade ago are no longer sufficient to cover the average cost of living.
