Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, in a telephone conversation, the Kremlin said Thursday, amid the political turbulence in the Central American country.

"The inauguration of the interim president of Venezuela and his recognition by USA and several regional states aims to aggravate the division in Venezuelan society and the growth of street fighting," lamented the Russian Foreign Ministry through a statement.

"We ask sensible Venezuelan politicians who oppose the legitimate government of Nicolás Maduro not to become pawns in someone else's chess game," the text added.

In this way they alluded to the American administration, which they also accused of "disregarding" the norms and principles of international law.

"It is an attempt to play the role of self-proclaimed arbiter of the destinies of other nations. There is a desire to turn Venezuela into proven scenarios for the change of unwanted governments," the Russian government lamented.

In addition, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in statements reported by Reuters that foreign interference in Venezuela is "unacceptable."

This Wednesday the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president and obtained recognition from Washington, which led Maduro to announce that he was breaking the diplomatic relations with the United States and that gave US diplomats a period of 72 hours to leave the Latin American nation.

From the tuesday night protests have broken out in the Venezuelan country that were the prelude to the rallies that took place this Wednesday in different parts of the territory.
