Chinese respirators arrive in New York; Trump asks Cuomo to thank federal aid

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday that the Chinese government has facilitated a shipment of 1,000 donated respirators to his state, as an example of the extreme measures leaders are taking to independently secure enough devices that could save lives. lives during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo praised the Chinese government for its help in securing the shipment of the assisted breathing machines, which arrived at Kennedy Airport yesterday, while acknowledging that the stockpile of medical supplies would be drastically reduced.

"We're all in the same battle here," Cuomo said, mentioning that the state of Oregon had also volunteered to send 140 ventilators to New York.

"I want this all to be over," Cuomo said, noting that while it's been about 30 days since the state's first case, "it feels like a lifetime."

Trump also stated that the federal government is setting up a 2,500-bed field hospital at the Javits Convention Center in New York, which will be staffed by military personnel, and that similar projects are being built at hospitals in Louisiana and Dallas.

"Unfortunately there will be a lot of death, but a lot less death than if this were not done," Trump said. He later added that the federal government is "a backstop... the biggest backstop there has ever been for the states."
