The US government urged all patients who have recovered from the coronavirus to give plasma for the benefit of thousands of people who remain hospitalized due to the disease.

"If you have recovered from #COVID19, confirmed by a positive test, please donate plasma now. You can literally help save lives," he posted on Twitter the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"There are thousands of locations across the country that have established safe ways for you to donate. Find one at http://coronavirus.gov," the agency detailed in its message, which was retweeted by the White House.

The executive headquarters also echoed the message of the United States representative for Pennsylvania, Mike Kelly, who assured that he donated plasma easily.

"As someone who has donated plasma, it is an easy way to make a big difference for someone in need. If you have recovered from COVID-19, ask your doctor about where you can donate and help save lives!" he said .

This method of combating the coronavirus began to be applied in the US thanks to the Cuban doctor Arturo Casadevall, who led a clinical project to use plasma rich in antibodies from recovered coronavirus patients in people in serious condition, and thus stop deaths from that disease in the country.

The procedure was effective at the beginning of the last century during the epidemic known as "the Spanish flu." In the current pandemic, it began to be used in New York hospitals last March, but soon spread to other states.

The NBA donated $100,000 to the Cuban immunologist's research team and very soon politicians who had tested positive for the coronavirus began donating plasma.

Among them were Florida Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart and Miami Mayor Francis Suárez.

The United States continues to be the country most affected by the pandemic, with a cumulative 4,603,204 positive cases of COVID-19 and 153,986 deaths from the disease, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.
