An 89-year-old man in the United States who works as a pizza delivery man has just received a gift of 10,000 euros from anonymous donors who were moved by his situation.
Derlin Newey, a retiree from Utah whose pension is not enough to make ends meet, had to go to a fast food restaurant to ask for a job to increase his income a little.
Despite his advanced age, he works 30 hours a week delivering Papa John's brand pizzas in the city of Roy, where only 35,000 people reside.
Carlos Valdez's family, who usually orders pizzas at home, met him one day and from then on they always requested that he be the one to carry their order. When Derlin arrived at the house, they recorded the delivery and uploaded it to the TikTok video platform on his @vendingheads channel.
According to what one of the Valdezes told KSL, a local television station affiliated withCNN, they gained more than 53,000 followers, many of whom asked why someone so old would deliver pizzas.
Then the family had the idea of doing a fundraiser to help the old man so he wouldn't have to work so much. In a few days they obtained $12,000 which they deposited in a check signed by 'the TikTok family'.
On the last visit to the Valdez house, the owner of the house made him come in and sit at the table to surprise him.
“Good morning, buddy. How are you? We have put together this gift together for you. And I'm here to give it to you, on behalf of the TikTok community. “We have raised $12,000 for you,” Valdez said.
The old man was moved to tears. “No, why did they do something like that?” he said.
“They love you and wanted to give you a gift,” responded a young woman.
“I can't believe it,” he said, shaking his head. “I don't know what to say except thank you,” he added.
In addition to the money, Derlin received a t-shirt with the phrase he says every time he makes a delivery: “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?”
For his part, Valdez expressed his joy for having helped the veteran deliveryman.
“He needed it and I'm glad we were able to help him. We just have to treat people with kindness and respect, like he does. “He has stolen our hearts,” he explained.
