This beautiful gem is linked to mystery stories. The original diamond belonged to the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, who was assassinated by the Bolsheviks. They stripped his crown of diamonds and one of them, 25 carats, passed into the hands of a Turkish jeweler who brought it to Cuba.

In 1929 the jewel was installed in the Hall of Lost Steps, but in 1946 it was stolen. The stone was later returned in an envelope, without a return address, which was left on the table of President Ramón Grau San Martín. The diamond now on display is also of Russian origin and is called 'The Faithful'.

Capitol of Havana: the symbol of the Republic

The traveler who arrives before the capitol diamond will be at the foot of another great treasure of Havana, the Statue of the Republic. This bronze sculpture is the third largest indoor sculpture in the world. It measures 17.54 meters and weighs a total of 49 tons.

It reflects a figure of a young woman, standing, dressed in a tunic, wearing a helmet, shield and spear. In 2019, in honor of Havana's 500th anniversary, the Office of the City Historian obtained the collaboration of the Russian Embassy to restore it.

The statue received a 24-karat gold patina, as did the plaques on the Capitol's golden dome, which, by the way, reaches 91.72 meters in height and is the sixth largest in the world. More than 20 Russian experts participated in these restoration processes.
