The financial director of Western Union, Raj Agrawal, expressed hope that the company will return to Cuba after the arrival of Joe Biden to the White House as the 46th president of the United States.

"We are hopeful that, putting aside any concerns that there may be from an administrative point of view, they will allow us to transfer money from people who want to send it to their loved ones," Agrawal told the agency. Reuters.

Agrawal also mentioned that with the new administration there are chances that "some of the policies and things they've talked about" will come into play, which will be beneficial for the company.

The statements by Western Union's chief financial officer occurred hours before Joe Biden officially took office as president of the United States.

This week, Walmart, the world's largest retail marketplace, and Western Union announced a new agreement that, for the first time, will allow money transfer services in its commercial establishments in the United States. Services will include domestic and international money transfers, bill payments and money orders, and will be offered in more than 4,700 Walmart stores, starting next March.

Exclusively for CyberCuba, Biden assured that the elimination of administrative obstacles against remittances and trips to the island It would be one of his first measures once he occupies the presidential office since the current restrictions "harm the Cuban people and keep families separated."

After 21 years of uninterrupted work, Western Union stopped working in Cuba after the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the Cuban company FINCIMEX S.A. for its links with the military power of the island.

The measure came into force on November 23, 2020 ending a business of 2.8 million unique transfers and about $1.5 billion annually from the United States.

In Cuba Western Union had more than 400 money delivery points, which had to suspend their services because the Cuban side, previously warned, did not look for an alternative company that was not linked to the GAESA conglomerate and that was in charge of receiving the money sent from other countries.
