For Yandy Nunez Getting to the top of the world is not a metaphor. The realization of your dream as a mountaineer is located at 8,848 meters high and has a name: the Monte Everest.
Very soon, in less than 48 hours, the Cuban will leave his adopted Iceland for Nepal, which will bring him closer to his goal. About the details of the expedition and his expectations, he spoke this Thursday in an interview with CyberCuba.
Parties this Saturday March 27th. How do you feel about the trip?
These final days have been a lot of stress for me, trying not to miss anything. I have the room turned upside down. Now the other process is to pack everything. Very eager to start the expedition. I'm a little bit nervous. It is the biggest challenge I am going to face and I am looking forward to this starting now, on Saturday.
I imagine you are nervous. On the other hand, I imagine you must feel confident in yourself because you have trained and worked very hard.
Yes. I have been working for many years to always look for a greater challenge. My last great challenge was Aconcagua, which I completed in only five days. And now I'm going for the biggest challenge: reaching the highest height of Mount Everest.
Between Aconcagua and Everest there is almost two kilometers of difference.
On my Aconcagua expedition I was able to work on my body to adapt much better to the altitude: drinking water daily, more than 3 liters, helps you a lot. From 7 thousand meters I could experience some change in myself. Starting at 7500 I will be using oxygen.
How many meters high is the last camp?
The last camp, number 4, is at 7950 meters..., but for you to get to the base camp is another process. When you arrive in Nepal you must take an internal flight to Lukla which is approximately 2500 meters high. From there you start walking to the base camp...I think it will take between seven and ten days to get there because I am going to make an acclimatization climb first to a mountain, Lobuche Peak, which is 6,120 meters.
It is lower than Aconcagua. What would be the difference in relief, temperature, climate between Aconcagua and Everest?
Are a lot of things. Aconcagua prepared me physically but also mentally and I learned how my body reacts. Of Everest, the relief conditions are the most difficult. To get to the camp you pass through frozen waterfalls [Khumbu falls or, in Spanish, Khumbu Falls] that are in constant movement, there are cracks and you must cross some stairs that are placed between crack and crack...And the other thing that I would say that the issue of altitude is fundamental
This trip demands physical, mental but also economic preparation.
The complete logistics of this expedition is around almost 40 thousand dollars. Other expeditions charge much more. The climbing permit alone costs 11 thousand. The oxygen bottles you have to use, which are between 6 and 8, cost about $450 each. The expedition suit, 1300; the boots, 1200. Everything counts. If you add it up there it is almost 18 thousand dollars.
I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the collection because I truly feel very grateful to each person who has done their bit. It doesn't matter if it is one, if it is 10 or whatever amount. For me, the gesture is worth a lot.
On this trip, in addition to the flag, I understand that you want to take something else
If I get up there, I want to dedicate it eternally to my grandmother and the people of Cuba, but also from there I want to leave a beautiful message of freedom for all those Cubans who dream of a different homeland. I also want to take Homeland and Life to the top of the world.
What do you think?
