A 33-year-old Cuban young man committed suicide on Thursday by jumping from the eighth floor of a building in Marianao, Havana.

According to a Facebook post, the incident occurred on the "eight floors" near 114th Street, in Marianao, when the young man climbed to the roof of the building and jumped into the void.

Local residents notified police and public health authorities, who covered the body and fenced off the area with tape to protect the scene.

Residents of the area who knew the victim identified him as Alexander Pascual, 33 years old, and stated that he lived in the alley of 47a between 74 and 76, very close to the Tropicana Cabaret.

Likewise, they described him as a tall, black-skinned man who lived with his mom and suffered from schizophrenia.

Suicide is the tenth cause of death in Cuba, and the third among those under 18 years of age, the Ministry of Public Health reported last year, regarding World Suicide Prevention Day.

According to official data, there is a greater prevalence of this disease in men, while attempts are more frequent in women.

The age group with the highest suicide mortality rate in Cuba is 20 to 59, and the provinces with the highest rates are Las Tunas, Holguín, Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus.

In February of last year, a young man committed suicide in Havana by jumping from the 14th floor of the Girón building, located on the corner of Avenida Malecón and Calle F, in Vedado; while another took his own life in Mayarí, Holguín, after being fined 5,000 pesos by the police for selling agricultural products on the street without having a license to do so.
