Thousands of Americans took to the streets and public spaces this Friday toprotest against the Supreme Court's ruling that overturns the historic "Roe v. Wade" ruling, which since 1973 recognized a woman's constitutional right to abortion and legalized it throughout the nation.

Several protesters stood in front of the Supreme Court in Washington, where the Democratic congresswoman also arrivedAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to demand that the judicial decision that marked a momentous victory this Friday for Republicans and religious conservatives who want to limit or prohibit the aforementioned medical procedure be corrected.

Videos posted on Twitter show women chanting that the decision to overturn "Roe v. Wade" is "illegitimate" and calling on people to "take to the streets."

Likewise, a strong military device can be seen deployed around the Supreme Court building.

Images on social networks also show that the protests spread to other states such as New York, where protesters gathered in Foley Square early on.

This Friday the court, ina 6-3 ruling driven by its conservative majority, upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law thatprohibits abortion after 15 weeks of gestation.

The Mississippi law had previously been blocked by lower courts on the grounds that it violated Supreme Court precedents on abortion rights.

The Jackson Women's Health Organization, Mississippi's only remaining abortion clinic, challenged the 2018 proposal and was supported by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration in the Supreme Court.

This regulation allows abortion when there is a "medical emergency" or a "serious fetal abnormality," but does not have an exception for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

According to the justices, the famous "Roe v. Wade" decision, which allowed abortions before a fetus was viable outside the womb – between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy – was wrong because the United States Constitution does not specifically mention the right to abortion.

The ruling maintains that the Constitution "does not grant" this right. Likewise, it returns the authority to legislate on abortion to the "people" and their "elected representatives."

The political storm on the issue has been unleashed since May, after a draft was leaked indicating the justices' intention to overturn Roe v. Wade.

It also attacks a 1992 resolution known as "Planned Parenthood versus Casey," which reaffirmed protection but allowed states to establish regulations on the process.

"It is time to abide by the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the elected representatives of the citizens," underlines the ruling written by Judge Samuel Alito.
