Hemingway, un Dolphin rescued from the wild in 2019, died this Monday at the age of 37 at the Clearwater Aquarium in Tampa due to gastrointestinal problems.
“Our team is heartbroken this morning. At approximately 1:30 a.m. Today our beloved rescued dolphin Hemingway passed away, surrounded by his Animal Care and Veterinarian teams,” the aquarium reported througha Twitter thread.
The animal was found stranded off Fiesta Key in July 2019, and a year later the aquarium determined it could not be released due to health issues and hearing loss.
Aquarium staff noticed a change in Hemingway's behavior late last week and began treating him for a suspected gastrointestinal condition.
Soon, a necropsy will be performed on the dolphin to study and determine the cause of its death.
“Clearwater Marine Aquarium is proud to provide a home to rescued, non-released and at-risk animals, like Hemingway, who need managed care. For the past 50 years, we have served as a marine animal hospital and advocates for marine life conservation,” one of the tweets added.
“During their time with us, staff were able to share Hemingway's story and the importance of protecting dolphins in the wild. “Our team learned new practices and continued to improve our approach to caring for dolphins with hearing loss,” he concluded.
Last April,a dolphin attacked its trainer during a show at the Miami Seaquarium. In the middle of a performance and in front of an audience mostly of families and young children, a dolphin named Sundance became rebellious and became violent with the trainer.
Photographer Shannon Carpenter, who was at the scene with his family, saw the dolphin attack and managed to record the video of the moment and share it on Tik Tok.
The Miami Seaquarium was recently sold to the Mexico-based Dolphin company, but many of the trainers, veterinarians and workers there remain the same. The place was being investigated for several cases of animal abuse.
