Elderly Cubans fight over two bags of empty cans

The intervention of a neighbor unrelated to the conflict, in order to calm the dispute, did nothing more than alter the spirits

This article is from 1 year ago

A video circulating on social networks shows the discussion of two ofCuban elderly for a couple of bags of empty cans intended, presumably, for the sale of raw materials to the State, a subsistence alternative that low-income people in the country usually resort to.

“Look what this guy is doing.”, one of the men is heard alleging that the other had stolen the bags in a moment of distraction, something that the aforementioned flatly denied, assuring that those cans had been given to him by his family.

The intervention of a neighbor unrelated to the conflict in order to calm the dispute only altered the mood.

“What to give it to him? “I go through a lot of work, boy.”, one of the contenders stated bluntly while the neighbor who served as judge reminded them that they were “old people now” for such a fight.

"Kind of shameless and thief too," said one of the elders shortly before pushing his counterpart and ending the unpleasant scene with his bare fist.

It is not clear when or where the incident occurred, although the reference to the town of Itabo, in the Martí municipality, could indicate that it occurred in the province of Matanzas.

In the forums where thevideo dozens of Internet users consider the incident further evidence of the misery prevailing in Cuba, to the point that two elderly people are capable of resorting to physical violence in order to preserve what will be a source of money for them.

"What is happening is the sad reality in which we are living. It is not a reason for laughter. It is sad because surely the money in the checkbook is not enough for them and it is enough to be able to eat", observed one of many Internet users in a criterion followed by the majority.

Other commentators focused their attention on criticizing the person who filmed the images.

“That's not a joke, what you have to do is calm things down andDo not take the discussion as entertainment and then upload it to the networks. Nobody feels empathy there anymore. One of those could easily be your grandfather, but that's how we are. "How sad everything is!" commented a Facebook user in reference to the laughter and mocking tone of the person who recorded the incident.

"May God also have mercy on you and in your old age you don't have to beg for cans and your livelihood," another commenter wrote.

Collecting raw materials is a resource used by low-income people, the homeless, alcoholics and others in need.

In recent years, social networks and independent media have given visibility toa growing number of elderly people who remain in the country in situations of extreme vulnerability.

More and more elderly people suffer in Cuba: whether due to poorly attended health issues, the housing crisis or the lack of economic resources to face the high cost of food, which they must assume with ridiculous pensions.

At least800 thousand retirees in Cuba receive the minimum pension amount per month.

Added to the drama of elderly people impoverished by a ridiculous pension in the midst of unstoppable inflation is the loneliness in which several generations have been plunged, whose children, in many cases, left the country.
