Viva Aerobús inaugurates cargo flights between Mexico and Cuba

The airline Viva Aerobús inaugurated cargo flights between Mexico and Cuba this Monday, becoming the first airline to establish cargo operations between both countries.

“This Monday, February 13, the new Viva Aerobús cargo flight took off at 5:45 p.m. This air operation will have as its destination Havana, Cuba; which is also framed within other announcements of new flights from the AIFA, by Cargo Jet Airways,” the Mexican media outlet indicated on its social networks. With a weekly frequency, flights will connect the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), in Mexico City, to the José Martí International Airport, in Havana. According to Millennium, this type of operations will contribute to increasing the efficiency of commercial routes between the two countries, since today the passenger load is limited to weight and balance.

Currently, Mexico and Cuba are connected by air with 29 commercial flights a week. For Viva Aerobús cargo flights, passenger aircraft will be used that will adapt to cargo needs.

According to the aforementioned Mexican newspaper, these flights will increase the efficiency of air traffic between the two countries, contributing to increasing exports with better transportation prices, in addition to reducing delays in airport luggage belts.

After the first flight, the airline declared that, as demand progresses, frequencies will be increased month by month. Viva Aerobús indicated that the items that will be moved are general cargo, such as perishable food, live animals, medicines, courier services, electronics and clothing, among others.

In recent statements, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that Viva Aerobús would carry out cargo operations from the AIFA, with six weekly frequencies. The company does not rule out extending this type of operations during the coming months from other airports, such as Cancún and Monterrey.

In mid-December, the airline inaugurated a commercial route to Havana. For its part, the Cuban Company of Airports and Aeronautical Services S.A indicated that Viva Aerobús would be operated with two daily flights from Mexico City, one daily flight from Cancún and on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Mérida to the José Martí international airport in Havana. .

The low-cost airline also has a daily flight from the Benito Juárez international airport, located in Mexico City, like Aeroméxico. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company remained the leader in connecting Cuba and Mexico.
