Olympic champion Fernando Dayán from Miami: “It is very sad to know that you cannot fulfill your dream in the place you were born”

The 24-year-old canoeist, who left a Cuban delegation in Mexico last March to emigrate to the United States, dreams of returning to the sport competing for his host country.

The Olympic canoe champion Fernando Dayán Jorge, whoabandoned a Cuban delegation in MexicoIn March 2022, he said from Miami that “it is very sad to know that you cannot fulfill your dream in the place you are born.”

Dayán Jorge, champion, in the company of veteran Serguey Torres, of the C2 test at a thousand meters in Tokyo 2020, spoke about his reasons for leaving Cubain exclusive interview for journalist Alexis Boentes, fromTelemundo 51.

“After having spent three months on vacation after the Olympic Games, that was when I really entered society, and where I was really living what all Cubans live,” he commented.

“There were many moments in which I was disappointed, that I did not agree with the things that were happening,” he emphasized.

The 24-year-old canoeist, whoemigrated to the United States via the southern border route, recounted in the interview an extreme experience, where he saved a Cuban woman named Lisandra from drowning while trying to swim across the Rio Grande.

“I start crossing ahead and suddenly I feel a commotion, when I look back it was Lisandra, she was panicked, terrified. I turned around and helped her and we left together,” said Dayán Jorge, who heard a message of gratitude from this Cuban migrant in the interview.

Regarding his current state of mind and his prospects for returning to the sport, the Cienfuegos athlete assures that “there are days when I feel tremendous freedom, but there are days when I go to bed wanting to get in a canoe, go out rowing.”

Dayán dreams of winning his first gold competing for the United States.

“Here you are going to achieve what you want, whatever you set your mind to, there are no limits,” concludes the Olympic champion, who recently managed to bring his family to the United States, the boost he needed to fulfill his dreams.
