Díaz-Canel asks athletes to increase combat on social networks

Díaz-Canel urges Cuban athletes to increase their presence and defense of the system on social networks in the face of what he considers attacks on the sector, without offering effective solutions to the real problems of sport in Cuba.

The ruler of CubaMiguel Diaz-Canel He considered sports to be one of the “most attacked” sectors on the island and therefore called on athletes to be “more combative” on social networks.

Present at the annual balance meeting of the Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), together with the prime ministerManuel Marrero Cruz, also the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) expressed several ideas thrown into the void without concrete support to execute them.

According to the digital portalJIT, the president claimed a need to strengthen ideological political work, for him the main cause of the desertions of athletes and coaches, and apparently not the low salaries and the poor conditions in which training is carried out.

He once again blamed the United States embargo for all the evils that national sports bring, and called on them to support the “measures” implemented to overcome the crisis that the country is experiencing.

“In the sports movement we must strengthen unity and how do we strengthen it? And I believe that a fundamental element to strengthen unity in the sports movement is that we give participation to athletes, technicians, coaches, all workers in the sports system in decision-making, because when we all analyze things..., we debate..., we criticize..., we make proposals..., and we obtain results, that compromises and that gives life," Díaz-Canel repeated in a formula that is not valid within the Cuban regime.

Likewise, he used the euphemism fashionable in Cuba to avoid referring to the errors that have led the country to the critical economic and social crisis: distortions.

In that sense, "he requested to correct distortions and re-boost the economy, in the case of sport also with the application of science and innovation," they stated inJIT.

His intervention focused on other problems that are recurring in sport such as the terrible conditions of the facilities, the talent from the base that is not given adequate attention, the major interest in exporting services abroad, although the most interesting thing was his approach. about reversing the forecast of five medals that falls on Cuba for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

In 2023 alone, more than a hundred athletes left the island.

According to a count on the digital portalCubanet The maximum number of athletes who left Cuba was 103. In a list that includes prominent names in the Cuban sports elite such asOlympic medalist Denia Caballero, who left the island's sports delegation that competed in the Castellón Provincial Council Meeting, in Spain, to others less recognized but who formed the quarry that was forged in disciplines such as baseball, hockey or handball, to name just a few.

Several members of thewomen's field hockey team that left the delegation attending the XIX Pan American Games held in Santiago de Chile in October 2023, they assured that the main motivation for leaving the island is the lack of resources to practice their sports and the lack of personal freedom.
