The heavy rains that causedthe flooding of the Jiguaní river and floods in several towns in the Granma province were not reported with sufficient clarity and in advance by the Cuban authorities, who did not activate the Civil Defense alerts in time.

Impressive images spread on social networksshowed the havoc, caused by the persistence of heavy rains in eastern Cuba, which caused a historic flood of the river, which in some points reached one meter above bridges and other steps in its course.

Before the beginning of the 2023 cyclonic season, the National Civil Defense General Staff issued instructions to undertake the actions established in Directive 1 for the Management of Disaster Risk Reduction, approved by the President of the National Defense Council (CDM),Miguel Diaz-Canel.

“Civil Defense advocates carrying out in advance actions that reduce vulnerabilities and contribute to reducing the impact of the destructive effects of these events,” said the official media.Granma at the beginning of June.

The pruning and felling of trees that constitute risks, the maintenance and cleaning of microdams, canals, sewers, drainage systems, the collection of debris and solid waste, in addition to the protection of resources located in warehouses, were addressed at the meeting of the organism.

“Special attention must be paid to the protection of families, who are still kept in temporary facilities or in the actions of total or partial construction of their homes,” stressed the official organ of the Communist Party of Cuba.

According to the journalistInes Castro, correspondent of Cuban Television in Granma, in the “last hours of intense rains in the Cuban East, CDM and Civil Defense authorities maintain constant evaluation throughout the territory, mainly in low-lying areas prone to flooding that require hydrological surveillance.” .

A 60-year-old man, a native of Jiguaní,He died drowning this week when the river flooded of the same name. It is the first time in history that the Jiguaní has left its channel and the effects of the natural disaster also occurred in homes and crops, local television reported.
