The city of Miami is among the first 15 cities where mail carriers suffer the most dog attacks in the United States, according to the Postal Service (USPS) of that country.
More than 5,300 Postal Service employees attacked by dogs while delivering mail last year across the United States, a common safety issue these workers face, notes a note by USPS.
The government agency prepared a ranking of the top 20 cities where in 2022 the largest number of dog attacks on employees who deliver mail and packages was recorded, and which includes 36 cities, since in some of these they reported the same number of attacks.
Miami occupies 15th place in the classification -next to Charlotte and Indianapolis-, with 21 attacks occurred the previous year. Likewise, among the 10 states where dogs have bitten the most mail carriers, Florida is in seventh place, with a total of 220 attacks in 2022 and 201 in 2021.
Miami was the only South Florida city to appear on the 2021 list; but in last year's record, Jacksonville is also included, in 20th place with 16 attacks.
To keep its workers safe, the agency runs an annual campaign that “provides important information about how dog owners can be good stewards of safe mail delivery” during National Dog Bite Awareness Week. Dog.
This year the campaign was carried out at the beginning of June. “When mail carriers deliver mail in our communities, dogs that are not secured or leashed can become unpredictable enemies and attack,” said Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager.
The official asked the public for help to “deliver your mail safely while keeping your dog safe and out of the way before your carrier arrives.”
The USPS recommends that homeowners keep dogs inside the home or behind a fence, away from the door or in another room, and on a leash when a mail carrier arrives; In addition, it suggests that children do not take mail directly from the postman, because pets may see this as a threat to the child.
According to the USPS statement, many of the attacks reported by mail carriers came from dogs with owners who claimed, "My dog doesn't bite."
