Siberian Husky survives after being thrown from a fifth floor in Sancti Spíritus

This Siberian husky fueled the controversy over animal abuse in Cuba and the need for stronger laws to protect animals.

A dog, a Siberian husky mix, was the victim of a severe act of violence in Sancti Spíritus, where his owner threw him from the fifth floor of the building and this was not enough for him, he continued hitting him until he left him motionless on the ground.

The animal was protected by community residents who asked the Arca Foundation in the province for help on social networks.

The president of the non-profit association, Sinai Ramos, a nurse and animal rights activist, came to the dog's rescue on March 8, in the middle of the night and during a blackout.

Johnny, is the husky who, against all odds, resisted a fall from the top of a building in the 23 de Diciembre neighborhood. Fortunately, he fell on a bush and that prevented his story from having a fatal outcome.

The activists picked him up in the building's garden and took him to a veterinarian. They gave him sedatives and moved him to a transitional foster home where Johnny has managed to recover quickly, without showing signs of aggression and sharing with other animals without problems.

The community threw itself into a moving act of solidarity, providing food and comfort in the midst of the chaos suffered by this dog, which also requires special care due to its size.

He violent accident reopened the debate on social networks about the inescapable responsibility of the State and civil society in the protection of animals in Cuba.

A gap is evident that urgently needs to be closed, between citizen consciousness and legal regulations that respond with rigor and justice to such acts of cruelty.

He Decree-Law No. 31 on Animal Welfare, approved in 2021, should be the guide in the fight against abuse, but it is perceived as insufficient in the face of the reality of a country where the protection of animals is left in no man's land too many times.

Many Cubans ask for the toughening of sanctions for animal abuse, the effective implementation of the decree and for citizens to stop fearing and report these cases.

Johnny's story is a call to reflection, a warning that it is time to leave behind a time of shadows for these living beings, intelligent animals that are companions, friends and an inseparable part of many lives.

The Cuban woman who took Johnny into her home temporarily is called Yenia Hernández González. He has other dogs and cats in his home.

"When I saw Arca's post, I immediately commented, bring him to my house. I barely knew that he had bitten someone, I came to find out moments before arriving. One is always afraid, but you have to know how to treat the animal, look for the weak part. I don't have air conditioning, but I walk around with the fan behind him. He thinks he's the male of the house and he's more than happy," he said in an interview with. Escambray.
