The Local Industries Company ofGuantanamo buys used clothing from the population to turn it into raw material for themattress making.

So far they have made more than 300 personal mattresses that they sell for 3,500 pesos to individuals, while the sale to companies and state entities is 3,200, according to the local newspaper. We will win.

In the case of the head municipality of the province and Imías, each one reports so far the purchase of more than 200 kilograms of fabric, which in the last caseIt will be used to manufacture mattresses for cribs.

The purchase and sale in the city of Guantánamo is carried out in the mattress factory itself - Máximo Gómez between 9 and 10 Norte - while in Yateras andBaracoa It takes place in the Base Business Units (UEB) of Felicidad and the center of the city of Primada de Cuba, respectively.

The official note does not specify how much the population is paid per kilogram of used clothing, nor the places where the mattresses are sold.

It is not the first time that Guantánamo has reported a similar initiative, since last year the Raw Materials Recovery Company in that provincehas already announced the production of mattress filling from textiles recycled in the province.

Daikel Socarrás Rey, director of the Cuban state company, said then that the production of high-demand assortments made from recycled elements had begun in the Guantanamo territory. He explained that they processed textile material to obtain filling or wadding, as it is popularly known, and that they also made and recycled springs.

Although technology in the world of mattresses has advanced considerably in recent years, with products such as high-density viscoelastic foam, Cubans living on the island cannot aspire to this.

Mattresses are also among the items that are sold at the highest price in stores in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC). Hundreds of dollars are also sold in the order of online pages where Cubans residing abroad buy basic necessities from their relatives residing in the country.

For decades, in Cuba it has been commonmattress repair by people who are dedicated to that work on their own. Hence, many residents in the country sleep on mattresses that were purchased 30 or 40 years ago and whose springs and filling have only been changed periodically.
