The mayor of the Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende, state of Guanajuato, decided to cancel the singer's concert Francisco Cespedes, scheduled for next Friday, due to some controversial statements in which He wished the death of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Mauricio Trejo Pureco (Institutional Revolutionary Party, PRI) argued that the wishes expressed by the artist towards the president of Mexico are offensive and provocative.
Likewise, he promised a full refund of tickets for those who do not decide to attend the presentation of the singer Eugenia León, who will replace the Cuban in the cultural programming.
While some applaud the mayor's determination to not allow violent speech, others argue that this is a limitation on freedom of expression.
Trejo Pureco stated that the cancellation of the concert, which would be at the "Ángela Peralta" theater, is not intended to censor the artist's opinions, but rather to safeguard respect and harmony in the community. In addition, he emphasized the importance of promoting constructive dialogue and fostering an environment of peaceful coexistence.
Until the moment of writing these statements, the Cuban singer has not commented on the matter on his social networks.
The Mexican press revealed some statements by Céspedes in which he said verbatim: “When you come to a country that is in great need, when there is a president who invites a Cuban dictator on September 15 and puts him above, I don't know, or That is, you can invite any president, but don't put him as the maximum, because that's why I really dislike that guy and I hope he dies."
For his part, himself López Obrador downplayed the situation in one of his morning sessions, and asked that the matter not be responded to with violence.
"What I want to say is that we should not wish anyone harm, and that I do not feel any grievance on their part. And I ask everyone to respect their point of view even when it is extreme," he said.
