Cuban arrested with 100 boxes of tobacco at Miami airport

The accused, identified as Adrián Reinoso, 44, faces charges related to illegal possession, sale and distribution of cigarettes, to which is added one for alleged falsification of labels.

AndCuban who arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Cuba wasarrested this Wednesday for trying toenter 100 boxes of tobacco, according to official reports.

The suspect, identified asAdrian Reinoso, 44, faces charges related toillegal possession, sale and distribution of cigarettes, to which one is added for allegedlabel counterfeiting, states the arrest report, cited byTelemundo 51.

On July 12, during a customs inspection of newly arrived passengers from Cuba on American Airlines Flight 2703, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer detected thealleged tobacco smuggling in possession of Reinoso.

The official observed several boxes ofH. Upmann brand tobaccos engraved, without labels, and multipleCohiba cigars individual. An inventory later revealed that there were50 boxes of each brand.

Authorities determined that the packages did not meet federal standards for accurate warning labels and were merchandise not permitted for sale in the United States.

Reinoso told officers that he did not smoke and that the cigarettes and cigars were for a friend, according to the police report.

Nevertheless,He was arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK)., of Miami-Dade County, and the seized merchandise was taken to an evidence warehouse.

Since September 2020, travelers from Cuba cannot return to the US with alcohol and/or tobacco products purchased on the island as accompanied luggage for personal use.

In 2019, a man, identified as Frank Josué Lozano Vega, was arrested at Miami International Airport accused ofCuban cigarette smuggling. The traveler was trying to bring in about 40 cartons of H. Upmann and Popular brand cigarettes from Cuba, an amount that exceeded the three cartons allowed then by Florida law.

Last week,A Cuban living in Spain was detained at an airport from that country for alleged smuggling of tobacco and cigarettes, after the authorities found 224 cigars and several boxes of cigarettes in his luggage.
