A Cuban appeared this Monday in the criminal court ofMiami-Dade County accused of stealing a boat inBrickell, and then leading a sea chase while trying to escape from the authorities.
The subject, 59 years old, has been identified asCarlos Alberto Menendez.
According to the arrest report - cited byAmerica Camel- The owner of the boat told police that he was walking near the boardwalk at 1155 Brickell Bay Drive on Sunday when he noticed a man using a surfboard.paddle to approach and then board his boat, which was moored about 100 feet away from the seawall.
After boarding the boat, Menéndez removed the mooring lines, turned it on, and headed north toward a nearby marina. He then turned around and headed south toward the Rickenbacker Causeway.
During the journey, He tried to ram pursuing officers on several occasions during a chase through Biscayne Bay.
The report indicates that police located the boat while Menendez was traveling south in the Intracoastal Waterway, nearDinner Key Marina.
Carlos Alberto Menéndez remains detained in the county's TGK jail.
The aforementioned robbery has not been the only one of its kind in recent weeks in South Florida.
Experts recommend boat owners not leave the keys inside the boats, turn off the batteries and install a GPS.
