Tropical Storm Franklin, which has been strengthening in the Atlantic for a few hours, is currently hitting the Dominican Republic with heavy rains.

The weather phenomenon has been moving inland over the Dominican Republic since 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, and potentially deadly flooding and landslides have already been reported due to heavy rainfall, the National Hurricane Center (CNH) reported on Twitter.

The storm will also affect Haiti, the report states.

The Dominican Government stated thatFranklin It touched Dominican territory south/southwest of Barahona, with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and stormy winds extended to about 185 km outside its center.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) of that Caribbean nation ratified the red alert for 25 provinces and the yellow alert for seven provinces due to possible urban and rural flooding, flooding of rivers, streams and ravines, as well as landslides.

The provinces on red alert are: Santo Domingo, National District, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Barahona, San Juan, Independencia, Puerto Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, San José de Ocoa, Azua, Pedernales, Bahoruco, Elías Piña Duarte, María Trinidad Sánchez, Monte Plata, La Altagracia, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Hato Mayor, El Seibo and Samaná.

Franklin formed three days ago in the Central Atlantic along with Tropical Storm Emily, an area of low pressure that was moving west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands.
