The damage to the national economy due to the “theft of electricity” inCamaguey amount to more than 11 million pesos, according to theCuban official press.
In a recent press conference in Camagüey,Juan Carlos Lacaba Jofre, director of the customer service base business unit of the Electric Company, revealed that during the current year there have been reports746 cases of electrical fraud in the region.
These types of crimes, which mainly involve the use of magnets as a manipulation method, have wreaked havoc on both the economy and the local electrical infrastructure.
The economic damages caused by these illegal actsexceed 11 million 227,503 pesos, with an additional loss of 2,200 MW in energy consumption, according toForward.
The Electric Company, owner of the electric meters, took strong measures to address this situation, removing the tampered devices for laboratory analysis and ensuring continuity of customer service.
Those violators whose guilt is proven will face fines of 500 to 1,000 pesos, in addition to the obligation to pay for the energy consumed over a period of one year.
Camagüey adopted an experience from the province of Sancti Spiritus, using inspectors with mobile applications capable of detecting electrical fraud from several meters away, even after the magnets have been removed.
This system, the official press assured, helps protect energy resources and the local economy by deterring those who seek to commit electricity fraud, and could serve as a model in the fight against this type of crime in other regions.
At the beginning of July, in Guantánamo they were detectednearly 260 electrical frauds worth more than 4 million pesos.
