Chicken disappears from the basic basket in Santiago de Cuba

The Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN) reported that in September no chicken or canned meat will be delivered as part of the basic basket in Santiago de Cuba.

Nevertheless, according to Juan Carlos Rosell Zarrabeitía, coordinator of programs and objectives of Commerce and Services of the provincial Government, no product from the regulated family basket has been eliminated, and "so far there are delays in its distribution at the country level."

The situation is critical regarding the distribution of the basic basket in that province. The official could not even give an estimate of when the coffee and oil quotas will be distributed.

Regarding the delivery of the “grain” quota, which has delays in the main municipality and Songo La Maya, Rosell Zarrabeitía stated that “food that is already in the country and is expected to arrive in the territory.”

Regarding sugar, during September only 3 pounds were distributed due to low availability, a situation that the official believes will continue in October.

In addition, he said that "work is being done to deliver the September rice this week to the 98 missing warehouses, and the additional kilogram is ensured for children and those over 60 years of age."

The distribution of compote for children is up to date in the municipalities, while in Santiago de Cuba there are 48 warehouses pending in June and their delivery is being settled.

Finally, only half of the eggs corresponding to August have been sold.

In a country with a high rate of aging and in the midst of a deep economic crisis, many Cubans depend on the so-called “booklet quota” for their subsistence. In recent months,The delays and non-distribution of some products have caused unrest among citizens.

Last May,after having reported at the end of April that those over 14 years of age would not receive chicken in May, the MINCIN had to go out to calm things down andreverse the measure after consumer reaction.
