Themother who abandoned her two-month-old baby in a hospital in Sancti Spíritus wassent to prison temporarily, according to the Provincial Prosecutor's Office.
Felix Sanchez Carrero, chief prosecutor of the Department of Family Protection and Jurisdictional Affairs of the Provincial Prosecutor's Office, informed the official newspaperEscambray that the accused was imposed the “precautionary measure of provisional detention for the crime of abandoning people in vulnerable situations, due to disability, minority, elderly or helpless.”
The identity of the woman has not been revealed by authorities..
Sánchez argued that caring for a child is part of parental responsibility and “non-compliance leads to actions being taken to return the minor to her family.”
"We are talking about a baby who has been deprived of affection and affection, but also of breastfeeding, which could affect her state of health and that is why different actions can be adopted, not only aimed at achieving the aforementioned restitution of minor, but to legally sanction the mother,” he explained.
The previous week it was known through social networks thatbaby Dianelys had been abandoned by her mother, two months old, at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital.
There she had first been treated in the Neonatology room, due to her low birth weight, and after being abandoned, she was transferred to the José Martí y Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital. After receiving the medical discharge, he washanded over to her maternal grandmother, in Jatibonico, by opinion of the Provincial Prosecutor's Office.
In the interview published this Thursday byEscambray, prosecutor Sánchez told details of the case. After the mother's pregnancy was detected, and she was identified as at risk, the woman refused to be hospitalized. The official assured that the prevention bodies of the municipality of Jatibonico began to work with her from that moment, given her refusal.
He stated that on several occasions he fled from the Camilo Cienfuegos Hospital, until he finally returned near the delivery date.
After the baby was born - preterm and underweight - she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, while the mother remained in the room. “From that moment on, the child abandonment began, since he did not take care of his daughter,” declared the prosecutor.
Sánchez indicated that, after learning of the final abandonment, the Provincial Prosecutor's Office received many calls from citizens interested in adopting the baby. However, he said that "the most advisable thing is that the minor remains within the family of origin."
He stated that "until this moment, the maternal grandmother has expressed her willingness to take on the upbringing of the minor, although currently the baby is under the parental responsibility of the mother and father," but he noted thatThe criminal process is processed only against the mother.
“It could happen that, once said process is completed, the Court imposes the accessory sanction of deprivation of parental responsibility or its suspension,” he said.
The prosecutor asserted that cases of abandonment like this “are not frequent” in Sancti Spíritus, although “we do deal with some cases of parental neglect towards their children.”
The solidarity of numerous Cubans, who responded to activist Yoandy Palomino's request for help, made thecollection and delivery of donations for baby Dianelys, who is currently under the care and protection of his grandmother.
