Consulate of Spain in Havana resumes processing of nationality applications

The announcement comes after multiple complaints about a long period of inactivity.

HeConsulate General of Spain in Havana announced this Thursday the resumption starting next week of the processing of applications for Spanish nationality thatThey are protected by the Democratic Memory Law (LMD), whose entry into force is about to be one year old.

“During this month of September, all users with credentials assigned before the month of July have been able to obtain an appointment, soStarting next week, credentials will begin to be assigned, in order of request, to those who requested them since last July and to those who request them from now on.", says the official statement, which comes after multiple complaints about a long period of inactivity.

The diplomatic headquarters admitted that it has received “numerous queries” about the assignment of credentials and appointments from those who have not yet been able to present their file andThey fear that they will not have time, since the application of the LMD has an expiration of two years, counting from October 2022, which means that the first anniversary is about to happen.

Given the high demand for applications, the Consulate warns that Credentials may take several weeks to be assigned.

However, the diplomatic entity assures that it is working to“provide additional means”and that all applicants who meet the requirements stipulated by the Democratic Memory Law can apply for nationality within the established period, that is, before October 2024.

The diplomatic headquarters recalled that obtaining appointments is a free process that can be done directly through its official platform to request appointments.

In this sense, he pointed out that "no person is obliged to resort to a processing agency to request and obtain an appointment."

“People who decide to use processing agencies to carry out this process must take into account that these agencies have no relationship with the Consulate General,” the entity concluded.

Popularly known as Grandchildren Law, the Democratic Memory Law opened the possibility for more descendants of Spaniards to choose to take advantage of Spanish nationality.

One of the sections that has increased the number of applicants the most is thatincludes the sons and daughters of legal age of those Spaniards whose nationality was recognized within the framework of theHistoric Remembrance Act of 2007.

In April of this year, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that between October 2022 and March 2023 it received a total of 51,040 applications to acquire Spanish nationality.

Most of them were presented in the consulates of Latin American countries, especially Cuba, Mexico and Argentina.

According to official data, Cuba is the country where the most people have so far obtained Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory law.

Between October and March, at the Consulate General of Spain in Havana4,041 nationality applications had been received, of which 1,970 had already been registered at the end of January, according to data to which he had accessEuropa Press in April.

According to data from the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad (PERE), more than 160 thousand Spanish citizens lived in Cuba at the beginning of 2023.

The figure represents 1,873 more than those who lived in the country as of January 1, 2022, when there were 158,960, and represents an increase of 1.7% (47.12 people) compared to the data as of January 1, 2022.
