Cuban government prepares world underwater photography contest in Varadero

It is the first time that this contest has been held on the Hicacos Peninsula, a restricted area with a small local population and a very touristy area.

The Cuban regime will host the19th World Underwater Photography Championship, which will take place inVaradero, from October 8 to 15.

Yanselí Pérez Marrero, subdelegate of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) in Matanzas, informedGiron that the participants of the event are already arriving at the most important resort in Cuba.

HeWorld Underwater Photography Championship It will take place in the midst of a deep energy crisis in the country, in a social context marked by the lack of food, inflation and the increase in poverty in Cuba.

However, none of this will be seen by most of the photographers who will visit the island, since the event will be held (for the first time) in theHicacos Peninsula, a restricted area, exclusively tourist, in a paradisiacal environment and with little local population.

Visitors will be largely isolated, in a"Idyllic Cuba". The objective of the regime is to transmit the beauty of Cuban nature and the strength of the island as a destination for this type of leisure activities. They want to achieve itwithout this implying showing the harshness of the current crisis that is lived in the country.

The event is sponsored by theWorld Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS) and includes the Fifth World Underwater Video Championship. Participants will compete in four categories, Macro, Wide Angle, Model and Spectacularity.

They have confirmed their participation in this contestunderwater photographers from Belgium, Spain, Turkiye, Netherlands, Japan, Portugal, Argentina, Kuwait, Slovenia, Germany, Chile, Ghana, France, Italy, Brazil, Croatia, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Cuba.

Last year a photo taken in theJardines de la Reina Archipelago, conquered thepremio Underwater Art 2021, in the Annual Ocean Art Underwater Photography Contest, one of the most prestigious international events on underwater photography.
