Illegal currency exchange house dismantled in Sancti Spíritus

The police arrested the owner of the house, who was engaged in the purchase and sale of foreign currency. According to authorities, she could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

A Cuban citizen who was dedicated toBuying and selling currencies wasdetained in the province of Sancti Spíritus and could be sentenced toup to five years in prison or pay a fine of 500 to 1,000 pesos, and even both, according to official sources.

The woman, who was not identified, used “her home as an illegal exchange house, where even self-employed workers and representatives ofMSMEs in search of currencies of different denominations,” reported the provincial newspaperEscambray .

In her activity, the detainee very frequently used social networks and instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp, where she published posters “I sell and buy currency.”

“The event in question materialized when they gave her the cash in national currency (CUP) and she, in turn, made the exchange for freely convertible currency or vice versa,” the report stated.

The authorities assured that the woman “was assisted by third parties, who extracted large sums of cash from ATMs, which contributed to quickly depleting the availability of CUP in the aforementioned machines.”

During the investigation, the police seized several pieces of equipment that were used in the operations, including twomoney counting machines that contained digital records of the transactions that were made, which allowed this activity to be demonstrated.

In addition, 10 magnetic cards were found that were in the name of the sanctioned woman and other people, as well as a notebook where she recorded, in her handwriting, each operation completed.

Likewise, large amounts of money in CUP, euros and US dollars were seized, in addition to a motorbike.

At the beginning of the criminal process, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Body of the Ministry of the Interior (TO MENTION) in the province of Sancti Spíritus, said that it was shown that the woman also provided home service to buy or sell said coins.

Thecurrency sales The black market has become a constant within the unstable Cuban financial market, because in state banking and financial entities, the only ones authorized to carry out this type of activity, marketing is limited and there is not always money.

Similar events have occurred in several provinces of the country. During 2022,In Camagüey more than 200 people were reported for banking scams related to electronic operations, most linked to currency exchange operations on the black market.

Despite this situation, which, according to the media itself, “hinders the true purpose of banking in Cuba,” currencies continue to rise in the country.

For this October 26, the dollar maintains its price of 253 CUP in the informal market, while the euro and the freely convertible currency (MLC) maintain their values of the last few days at 260 and 230 pesos, respectively, as revealed by the independent mediaelToque.
