With a total of 20 medals, the Cuban delegation to thePanamerican Games in Santiago de Chile 2023 this Sunday she jumped from seventh to sixth position in the medal table, currently being just one place away from fulfilling her best prediction for this competition.

After half of the competition dates had passed, it was not until this Sunday that Cuba achieved its sixth and seventh gold medals, led by judokas Maylin del Toro (63 kg) and Idelannis Gómez (70 kg).

Six silver medals and another seven bronze medals complete the medal table of the Cuban athletes, who this Sunday surpassed the host country. As he assured the agencyFrance 24 the vice president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder),Ariel Sainz, there was that "the gold harvest could be around 18 to 22."

This Sunday other Cubans also saw action on the tatami. However,Maikel McKenzie andMagdiel Estrada (73 kg) were left without medal options.

The Cuban judo squad has accumulated three medals, a harvest that, according toJit, could grow this Monday if they achieve victoriesIdalys Ortiz (+78 kg), Lianet Cardona (78 kg), Ivan Silva (90 kg), Lyster Cardona (100 kg), Omar Cruz(+100 kg) andAndy Granda (+100 kg).

Collective sports such as baseball and women's volleyball bid farewell to the medal zones, with performances that have shown the debacle of these disciplines, once inspiring the Cuban sports movement.

To cite the example of baseball, his last great failure In Santiago 2023 it was against a Brazil that, despite not being traditional in this sport, represented an executioner for the Cuban offensive. Meanwhile, the volleyball players left Santiago without harming their rivals.

The Cuban delegation participates this Monday in nine disciplines, with options for medals in athletics, fencing and judo, according to the aforementioned media.

The disco ballsSilinda O. Morales andMelany Matheus They compete in the final of their discipline, in which there will also be male representation with the discus throwersMario A. Diaz andJorge Y. Fernandez.

In the 4x100 relay final there will be four Cuban sprinters:Yoandys Lescay, Yoao Illas, Lisneidy I. Veitía andZurian Hechavarría. In fencing and table tennis there are also medal possibilities.

With the current numbers, the truth is that if Cuba does not hurry up in its next performances, “the gold harvest” could be lower than expected, especially because figures who aspired to be included among the medalists have already said goodbye to the event.

The performance of the Cubans in these Pan American Games has loomed over the possibilities of a delegation diminished by the losses of some athletes who were prospects for reaching the podium.

According to SainzFrance 24, only in 2022 andSo far this year 187 athletes have left official delegations, “33 of them committed” to the Pan American Games in Chile.

Cuba has participated uninterruptedly in the Pan American Games since they were first held in 1951. The country hosted the games in 1991, in Havana, in which it obtained its only first place, beating the United States by 10 gold medals (140- 130). In the historical medal table of these events, the country remains in second place.

If it does not climb positions in the next few days, Cuba would equal its regular performances from Winnipeg 1967 and Lima 2019. Its worst results were verified in Mexico 1955 (9th place) and Chicago 1959 (8th).
