The deadline to register for the United States Diversity Visa Program, known as Visa Lottery, will be open until Tuesday, November 7.
Applications for the draw, identified as DV-2025, it's made on https://dvprogram.state.gov, only valid registration link.
The program, according to the US State Department, allows people from countries with low immigration rates in the US and who meet certain requirements, enter to apply for an immigrant visa.
This program is one of the most anticipated by thousands of Cubans annually who aspire to escape the general crisis on the island.
The instructions have been available since last October 4 - the date the registration period opened - at http://travel.state.gov/dv.
Participation in the visa lottery program is free and applicants must meet several eligibility requirements.
These are: 1) having been born or being the spouse of someone born in one of the qualifying countries; 2) have a secondary education or demonstrate two years of work experience in the last five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training.
As for the photo, the face must be in the center and the person must look at the camera, they cannot wear glasses or hats and the background must be clean and without shadows. The image cannot be out of focus.
In last year's edition, 3,081 Cubans won the lottery, a figure that more than doubled the 1,358 granted in fiscal year 2023.
Cuba was the Latin American country that received the most visas, out of a total of 3,150 granted to South America and the Caribbean.
According to a bulletin from the Kentucky Consular Center, the lottery was carried out in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, which grants up to 55,000 permanent resident visas to people from countries with low immigration rates to the United States.
The selection is made at random, without taking into account the number of family members who could immigrate with the selected person.
On May 6 of this year, the US government published the results of the Diversity Visa Program (DV-2024), corresponding to fiscal year 2024, and confirmed that it would give 55,000 places for permanent residence to applicants from eligible countries, including Cuba. However, the number of winners by country was not revealed until August.
In the last two years, the number of Cubans who have entered US territory has increased considerably.
Only in the recently concluded fiscal year 2023 (FY2023) - from October 1, 2022 to September 30 - a total of 200,287 Cubans requested political refuge in United States territory after entering through its land borders, according to official figures from the Customs Department. and Border Protection (CBP).
Added to this is that since the Humanitarian Parole Program was enabled - in January of this year - more than 52 thousand Cubans received authorization to travel to the United States, according to official figures from the United States Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
