The US government expressed concern about what they described as a “dramatic increase” incharter flights from Cuba to Nicaragua.

“Concerned by reports of a dramatic increase in charter flights to Nicaragua that facilitate irregular migration from Cuba and elsewhere to the United States. “No one should benefit from the desperation of vulnerable migrants,”Brian Nichols said this Monday on X, Undersecretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Last month, images emerged of howCubans crowd Havana airport on their way to Nicaragua, in the midst of a reactivation of the migration crisis in the country.

In the images you can see people of all ages, many of them elderly, who will probably begin a dangerous land journey in Nicaragua towards the Mexican border with the United States.

Although trips to Nicaragua have decreased since last January following President Joe Biden's new immigration measures, as of August 1 – after the announcement that the United States would once again accept asylum applications from Mexico – long lines returned at immigration agencies. trips to buy tickets.

“Among the misery and hunger that exists in this country, Cubans are queuing outside CONVIASA in the Miramar business center to get their ticket to Nicaragua, so desperate are they that they are crazy to leave the country and get out of this island, where there is nothing,” said a Cuban who filmed the images of the long line in front of the travel agency.

In September, the stampede of Cubans abroad, in search of a better life, showed no signs of stopping, and this was also attested to by the shocking images of the crowds that packed the Frank País International Airport in Holguín during that month to travel. to Nicaragua.

During that month, official figures from the United States Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated that 50,185 Cubans had already arrived in their country.

Another access route to the country has been crossing borders. CBP detailed in its fiscal year 2023 closing report that there were200,287 Cubans who requested political refuge in United States territory.
