The Cuban single-family home House B, from the group of independent Cuban architects Understudy, was nominated in the ArchDaily 2023 Building of the Year Awards.

The team of Understudy It is made up of the architects Anadis González, Fernando Martirena, Gerardo Guillén and David Medina. They received the recognition after having their work distinguished on the platform ArchDaily as one of the best houses in the “New Practices” category.

House B It is located in the Artemisa province. It was built between 2017 and 2021 using mainly reinforced concrete and wood.

The challenge of the construction project was that the house had to maintain the characteristics of the housing that existed there. They had dimensions of 14 x 14 meters in perimeter, a gable roof and a portal on all four sides.

"It is a weekend house with surprising views. It had to be open to the landscape to take advantage of its position and have the possibility of being completely closed once its residents return to the city," the architects noted.

They built a palm wood house that hides another house inside, made of glass and reinforced concrete. Despite having a large size, the building manages to blend into the landscape. Its creators were inspired by some cabins in Soroa and tobacco drying houses.

This is the fourteenth consecutive year that ArchDaily allows readers to vote for their favorite projects. The contest will be open until February 15. More than 4,500 building designs participate and only fifteen will win prizes.

The categories of the competition are: Houses, Housing, Health Architecture, Industrial, Educational, Sports, Cultural, Hospitality, Interiors, Commercial, Public and Landscape, Religious, Small Scale and Facilities, Offices and Best Applied Product. Winners will be announced on February 23.
