The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, signed a momentous security agreement in kyiv, marking a milestone in European history and strengthening bilateral collaboration.
The pact, described by Zelensky as "unprecedented", seeks to resist future Russian aggression and guarantee the security of Ukraine, and will remain in force until Ukraine's entry into the I'LL TAKE, according to Europa Press.
“Today is the day when the history of Europe changed. Ukraine and Britain signed an unprecedented new security agreement. This is not just a statement. “This is a reality that will come thanks to our cooperation and, in particular, the security guarantees of a prominent world power: Great Britain,” Zelensky declared on his social networks.
Welcoming the British Prime Minister to his country, the Ukrainian president reflected that “if such a level of guarantees had been achieved after 1991 with Great Britain and other countries, then there simply would not have been Russian aggression,” focusing on the agreements of the Western powers after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
London's support was evident when Sunak stated that the United Kingdom will remain with Ukraine for as long as necessary. This commitment aligns with the G7 decision to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, with the United Kingdom being the first country to formalize such an agreement.
The bilateral agreement addresses security cooperation, including intelligence sharing, cybersecurity assistance, and medical and military training. In addition, it guarantees rapid and sustained support in the event of future Russian aggression. During the joint press conference, Sunak emphasized that wavering support for Ukraine would only empower adversaries such as Vladimir Putin.
The British commitment is not limited to the agreement, as the UK Government has announced new financial aid for Ukraine, valued at €2.9bn (£2.5bn), the largest amount since the start of the Russian invasion.
This package includes a significant commitment to military drones, aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities in strategic areas such as long-range missiles, air defense and maritime security.
Sunak highlighted that this support seeks ensure Ukraine's victory on the battlefield and underlined the strategic importance of the investment. The €200 million increase on previous years reflects the UK's determination to support Ukraine at critical times.
At the end of his speech, Sunak reaffirmed that Ukraine is not alone and that the British commitment is long-term. He stressed that Ukraine's fight for freedom inspires the British people and stands as an investment in the collective security of free nations. The aid not only seeks to ensure the integrity of Ukraine, but also to curb possible aggressive expansions by Putin in the future.
