The Cuban Professional Baseball Federation (FEPCUBE) announced this Monday that the Cuban independent baseball team will be training all week at the Miami Dade College field.
“Keep the party going! We will be training ALL week, from Monday to Saturday, starting at 9am at the Miami Dade College stadium. We are waiting for you!”, he announced on the social network X.
After the cancellation of the Barranquilla Intercontinental Series, the Cuba Dream Team announced an exhibition game next January 29 with the Houston Apollos, the US team also invited to the tournament.
The Dream Team already played a first exhibition game against Miami Dade College, which was a resounding success, in a Miami Dade College Demie Mainieri Stadium packed with fans.
The Cuba Independiente team won the victory by winning 3 to 2, in a meeting in which very emotional moments were experienced, such as the one starring former big leaguer Eddie Oropesa, 52, who left the field crying after striking out the two batters he faced.
The Houston Apollos is an independent team created in 2002 that has played in different independent leagues such as the Big States League, the Pecos League and the American Association of Professional Baseball, the latter an affiliate of the MLB.
The Intercontinental Baseball Series, scheduled to be held in the Colombian city of Barranquilla starting January 26 and in which the FEPCUBE team would participate) was canceled after pressure from the Colombian government.
The government of Gustavo Petro, an ally of the Cuban regime, was against the presence of the FEPCUBE team in the Intercontinental Baseball Series.
The authorities of that country made it clear in a statement that the use of Cuban national symbols by the FEPCUBE team “would be interpreted as a clear infringement of the constitutional and sporting rights of the Republic of Cuba.”
After that, Edison Rentería, organizer of the tournament, announced that the FEPCUBE players would not use either the Cuban anthem or the Cuban flag. Added to this is that the team of Cuban baseball players, which would initially be called “Patria y Vida”, also chose to change its name to Dream Team.
However, despite such concessions, the event has ended up being cancelled.
