The respected Cuban visual arts critic Héctor Antón Castillo died in Havana at the age of 60, The artist Julio Llópiz-Casal reported this Sunday on Facebook.
“Hector Anton, my brother... Thank you so much for all the enthusiasm, the tricks and the complicity around art that you shared with us. Thank you also for the beers, the ironing and the stimulating laughter. “Light on the definitive path,” he said on Facebook.Llópiz-Casal.
Other Cuban artists and intellectuals have shown their astonishment and regret on social media.
The causes of death have not been revealed.
Héctor Antón Castillo, who was born in Camagüey in 1963, had obtained the “Guy Pérez Cisneros” National Prize for Arts Criticism in 2004 with the text “The other 'death of the author'”, an award that he won again in 2008, with the essay “Against caution: a reason for other unreasons.”
Likewise, in 2006 it won the Critics Award in the Contest sponsored by the magazineClairvoyance with “The unfinished paradoxes of Pedro Pablo Oliva”.
He was a regular contributor to Cuban cultural magazines such asThe Gazette of Cuba andArtecubano and more recently from independent media such asHypermedia, The sneeze ORegular.
In the obituaries on the networks, many have highlighted his ingenuity, teaching and closeness with independent Cuban artists of the last generations.
